There are times when clichés are overblown and there are times when they actually understate the situation. The notion that SEM and SEO are effective marketing channels in part because they are “very measurable” falls into the latter category.

Several years ago, the most significant analytics’ usage hurdles included the costs, the complexity of the installation process and the ability to access the data once the program was set up. Because of these issues, very few companies were able to leverage the data that was potentially available to them. As a result, marketing and site decisions were based more on intuition then clear-cut data. Interestingly, many organizations thrived in that environment; a fact attributed more to the lack of competition that firms faced than the actual effectiveness of their SEO and SEM campaigns.

All of those former obstacles have been removed by programs such as Google Analytics.
